Workshop with Margaret Edwards - March 2013

The members of New Zealand Olive Growers and Exporters Ltd. who market their extra virgin olive oil under the "First Drop" label, don't rest on their laurels.

They have recently received further international recognition at the inaugural Armonia Southern Hemisphere competition, held in Sydney, against contestants from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Their entry, the Te Rima J5 oil received both the Damien Conlon Trophy and a Grand Mention diploma.

Margaret Edwards is New Zealand's only International Olive Council recognized sensory panelist and International olive oil judge and has held a workshop on blending olive oils for the company, at Mangonui. Constant up-skilling is necessary to keep ahead in this competitive field.

First Drop is a small, hardworking group which exports it's locally grown, premium olive oils to North America, Europe and Japan. A quantity is available for local distribution at the Saturday morning Mangonui Craft Market, Kerikeri Farmers Market and from Hihi Olive Estate by arrangement. (Phone first.).

The inaugural Southern Hemisphere ARMONIA (Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) Championship concluded in December 2012 with the presentation ceremony at the SYDNEY SEAFOOD SCHOOL. The competition was organised by ALMA, Extravirgin Olive Oil Agency and Olive Oil Academy.

To present the Awards to the olive oil producers, 'young chefs' and 'cooking enthusiasts' were renowned Sydney chefs and journalists including Peter Gilmore, Giovanni Pilu, Ross Lusted and Joanna Savill, co-editor of The Sydney Morning Herald GOOD FOOD GUIDE.

Competing entries were from South Africa, Australia & New Zealand; First Drop being the only New Zealand Competitor to win an award.
